5 Tips To Be Productive While Working From Home

Whether it has been by choice or by necessity many companies have recommended that employees work from home (WFH). For many, it is the first time working from home, a totally new reality that takes some time to get used to it. With the right effort, you can stay productive while taking care of yourself and your loved ones during this uncertain time.

To a certain degree, everyone is in the same boat, but each one of us is living the WFH situation uniquely. Just remember to have empathy, understanding, and compassion for everyone involved. Self-isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic brings new challenges, but along with these challenges, there are also great opportunities. This unique situation we are all living allows us to rethink all areas of our life and continue learning to ensure this moment becomes building blocks for the upcoming future.

We have put together a list of 5 tips that can be very helpful during this time, especially if it’s your first-time WFH

Top 5 tips to stay productive while Working From Home:

Designate a Workspace

If you can sit down and be productive anywhere, that’s great. Reality is that most of us need to have more structure, that’s why we need a establish a designated workspace. Whether it’s a full room, or a desk make sure you have a designated workspace that will help you to keep motivated and comfortable while you are working. Having a designated workspace in your house will help you avoid distractions during working hours and will help you be more productive. This will also help you set boundaries in your house especially if you have kids, it will be easier for them to understand that when you are in your designated workspace its time to work and they cant be interrupting you.

Set Working Hours

Decide on what your working hours will be, and stick to them! Even though you have nowhere to be, you should set your alarm for the same time Monday to Friday and run through a morning routine just like you would if you had somewhere to be. Then you should start and finish your working day at the same time every day.

There are different techniques to manage your time while working from home, at Consensensus some of us have been using the Pomodoro technique. It is a revolutionary time management system that teaches you to work with time, instead of struggling against it.

It is very simple, the length of working and break times can vary depending on what you prefer, but here’s the basic process:

  1. Start a 25-minute timer
  2. Work until the timer rings
  3. Take a short, five-minute break
  4. Every four pomodoros (focus periods), take a longer break—usually 20-30 minutes

Because the whole technique centers around timing your focus periods and breaks, it helps to rely on a timer app to keep you on track and focused throughout the day. If you want to learn more about this technique click here.

Schedule Breaks

Just like any working environment, giving yourself breaks is very important to let your brain and body relax. So make sure you take the time to refresh your mind and body. Remember that a five to 15-minute break from screens, meetings, and work, will make all the difference. During that time catch up with a loved one on the phone, help your kids with virtual classes or homework, cook something or just relax. Also, take a proper break for lunch (And don’t forget to keep a glass of water on your desk to help you stay hydrated). Remember breaks can actually significantly improve productivity levels and a person’s ability to focus, use the Pomodoro technique to easily track breaks.

Don’t Use Extra Time to Work

We all know that sometimes while working from home it is very easy to keep working extra hours. It is important to avoid this situation, make sure you decide what your working hours will be and stick to that. Taking time off to recharge can do more for your mental health,  productivity and energy levels thank you can imagine.

Psychologist Guy WinchIn has a great TED Talk, in which you will learn how to stop worrying about tomorrow’s tasks or stewing over office tensions with three simple techniques aimed at helping you truly relax and recharge after work.

Use Free time o enhance your skills

There are great opportunities to use online learning to improve your skills while staying at home due to COVID-19. Especially if you’re out of work or your work hours have been reduced, it can be great for your mental health to give yourself new goals to work toward. It’s also a chance to catch up on all that work-related learning that’s typically so hard to find the time to do.
